the district named after stegelitz, germany, home town of pioneer family kleingschmidt.


in late 1800s, farming district located between pimpama river , logan river called pimpama island , encompasses modern localities of jacobs well, norwell, steiglitz , woongoolba. referred island because there number of lagoons , swamps isolated area during wet season; however, disadvantage made land growing sugar cane.

the rocky point sugar mill established carl heinrich heck in 1878 on mill road (and crosses boundary between woongoolba , steiglitz). despite being 1 of oldest sugar mills in australia, still privately owned heck group. there once other sugar mills in area, have closed , rocky point has expanded replace lost capacity.
