the lot on building stands today bought serbian state in 1818. 1 of konaks of prince miloš obrenović located there. building seat of metropolis of belgrade , karlovci built in 1863. one-storey building, simplified , reduced ornaments on façade. though modest in terms of architectural value, important historically. before demolished make room new building, patriarch varnava commissioned painter kosta hakman paint edifice. hakman made 2 paintings in 1933, 1 of central building , of small auxiliary kitchen object. popular myth @ time claimed in kitchen object severed head of karađorđe kept in 1817, before miloš obrenović sent istanbul. paintings kept in museum of patriarchate @ patriarchate court in sremski karlovci.

serbian orthodox church adopted new constitution in 1930. article 48 called construction of new seat of patriarchate in neighborhood of savinac, on vračar plateau. in process, church decided demolish old metropolis building in kosančićev venac , build new one. project on vračar envisioned monumental one, decided new metropolis building constructed first. further problem caused slow , uncertain construction of the, monumentally planned, church of saint sava, drained largest funds, postponing construction of other planned sacral objects. additionally, old metropolis building in bad shape anyway got priority , serve temporary seat of church until project on savinac finished.


construction

the building project of russian émigré architect viktor lukomski. among other buildings, designed small church of saint sava on vračar, eponymous hotel on avala mountain , royal palace within royal compound on dedinje. plan finished in 1932 when construction began. 1933 old metropolis building demolished , new edifice finished in 1935. after completed, government said there no more money left another, monumental administrative church building, implying new building quite suitable seat of entire serbian orthodox church, not 1 of eparchies. though today 1 lot next church of saint sava reserved planned building, construction never started.


during digging foundations, underground corridors, or lagums discovered. connected princess ljubica s residence, cathedral church , metropolis building. dug on orders prince miloš, meet leaders of church, unbeknownst ottomans ruled serbia @ time. lagums used builders of new edifice conduct heating pipes.
