the ruins of st gwenllwyfo s church stand near dulas, in north-east of anglesey, wales. date of construction of first church on site unknown. there church here in medieval times: 1 19th-century writer suggested present building dates 15th century , font, 12th century in date, surviving part of earlier church on site. restoration work carried out in 1610 , in 18th century; latter changes eradicated church s historical details.


the church (dedicated gwenllwyfo, 7th-century woman whom nothing else known) chapel of ease attached parish of amlwch, 5 miles (8 km) away. parish tithes, however, divided between bishop of bangor , incumbent of st eilian s church, llaneilian. area takes name church: welsh word llan meant enclosure , church , , ‑wenllwfyo modified form of saint s name.


in 1812, priest responsible church edward hughes, wife niece of owner of llys dulas, landed estate in area. employed architect carry out further restoration work, although details unknown. church in need of further repair middle of 19th century, , congregation needed larger building. new church therefore built between 1854 , 1856 two-thirds of mile (1.1 km) away, financed largely widow of william hughes, 1st baron dinorben (the son of edward hughes). old church, allowed fall ruins, stands in disused cemetery surrounded trees.
