men s basketball

utpa, pan american college, won 1963 naia division men s basketball tournament under coach sam williams. lucious jackson a/k/a luscious luke jackson 1 of players on championship team. jackson selected 4th overall during 1964 nba draft. selected 1964–65 nba all-rookie team , played in nba all-star game same year. played entire career philadelphia 76ers.


the basketball program, during mid-1970s coached abe lemons. under lemons, program had successful seasons but, lamentably, failed invited ncaa tournaments. coach lemons later hired away university of texas @ austin.


upon lemons departure university of texas @ austin, bill white named head basketball coach. while @ pan american, coach white led broncs first post-season tournament play @ division level. during 1980–81 season, pan american earned berth 1981 national invitation tournament. broncs lost 1981 nit champs, university of tulsa golden hurricane.


the basketball program later coached lon kruger, later went on coach @ kansas state, florida, illinois, unlv, , oklahoma. coached atlanta hawks of nba.


women s basketball

the vaqueros began play women s basketball in 1982. 10-5 record in naia play winning season until 2014, when finished 19-15 in final season broncs. finished season in wac title game, though lost new mexico state 70-52. invited wbi, first ever postseason appearance in school history. lost louisiana-lafayette 78-56 in first round. next year, finished 18-13, marking first time in program history had consecutive winning seasons. though lost in wac title game new mexico state again, invited wbi, lost tcu 97-73.


women s volleyball

on november 19, 2016, utrgv women s volleyball team defeated utah valley woman s volleyball team, making them western athletic conference (wac) volleyball champions of 2016.


baseball

the utpa baseball squad placed 4th in 1971 college world series under coach al ogletree.


tennis

the utpa tennis program won several doubles naia championships 1959 through 1962 under coach don russell, himself captured several championships while playing , coaching team.


conference history

after becoming four-year college in 1952, broncs members of naia until 1962-63 season. broncs independent in first year of naia membership. 1953-54 season 1961-62 season, teams members of big state conference. in 1962-63, team had dual membership in naia , ncaa division ii. broncs began transitioning ncaa division in 1965-66 tennis team. men s basketball began transition in 1968-69. broncs men s basketball participated independent until 1979-80 season when team member of trans-america athletic conference , returned independent status until 1986-87. utpa joined american south conference charter member in 1987 , remained member until american south conference merged sun belt conference in 1991. broncs left sun belt conference @ end of 1997-98 season , returned independent status.[8]


in 2008 announced broncs charter members of football-only great west conference when began all-sports play in 2008. during fall of 2008, utpa cross country team first win great west conference team title.[9] utpa exited great west conference after 2012–2013 season.


the utpa broncs 1 of newest members of western athletic conference (wac). women s soccer returned athletic program in 2014, , men s soccer started in 2015.
