dharamvir bharati (1926–1997), renowned hindi novelist, poet, , playwright. novels, gunahon ka devta (the god of sins, 1949) , suraj ka satvan ghoda (the seventh horse of sun, 1952), classics of hindi literature. latter adapted film shyam benegal in 1992.

playwright , theatre director satyadev dubey heard of play , met bharati when latter had dropped in see dubey s hindi adaptation of albert camus s cross purposes, sapne. recognizing potential, dubey walked around script 10 years trying done. dubey had been running theatre unit (a theatre group started ebrahim alkazi moved delhi in 1962 director of national school of drama, delhi), after staging himself in 1962, dubey sent script alkazi. though many found play lacking action, alkazi believed, action not rushing around. it’s inward growth.

alkazi s production made history in modern indian theatre, when staged first andha yug in 1963, first amidst backdrop of ruins of feroz shah kotla, delhi , purana quila s tiered steps in 70s. brought in new paradigm in indian theatres. music production given noted composer vanraj bhatia.

in coming years, play attracted many directors , staged across country, including mohan maharishi, ram gopal bajaj, , bhanu bharti. m.k. raina staged play in berlin , festival of india in ussr in 1987, ratan thiyam staged in open-air performance in tonga, japan, on 5 august 1994, day before 49th anniversary of atomic bombing of hiroshima. other noted productions have been directors arvind gaur, girish tiwari (girda), , bijon mondal (2010), gave contemporary twist, accompanied fusion band. notable production in 2010 @ feroze shah kotla ruins included cast of ashish vidyarthi (ashwatthama), uttara baokar (gandhari), mohan maharishi (dhritrashtra), vasant josalkar (vidur), ravi jhankal (vriddha yachak), om puri (krishna), govind namdev (vyas).
