grapevine radio commonly used name approximately ten community networks established in rural upstate south carolina. in operation 1930s mid-1940s, , each served few hundred local homes. programming distributed central site, using equipment in location such room of general store, , consisted of programs picked radio stations re-transmitted on facility s wire network. local programming provided, originating studio @ distribution site, or relayed local church or other gathering place. locally produced programming included announcements , emergency messages, commercials , live performances. first grapevine system established gordon f. rogers, operating home in mauldin, south carolina. grapevine systems became unneeded, because served homes did not have electricity. once community received electric service local grapevine system close down, subscribers switched radio receivers receive wide selection of programs, instead of single program heard subscribers on grapevine systems.
