history

the name lenton derives river leen, runs nearby.


lenton , mills on leen mention in domesday book in late 11th century: in lentune 4 sochmen , 4 bordars have 2 ploughs , mill.


lenton priory

lenton priory founded in village william peverel @ beginning of 12th century. cluniac monastery, priory home french monks until late 14th-century when freed control of french mother-house, cluny abbey. 13th-century priory struggled financially , noted poverty , indebtedness . priory dissolved in 1538 part of king henry viii s dissolution of monasteries.


following dissolution priory demolished , lands passed through private hands. priory church of st. anthony, lenton, thought incorporate elements of chapel of priory s hospital.


in 2005 lenton celebrated nine-hundredth anniversary of foundation of lenton priory. centrepiece of celebrations special festival held in grounds of priory church of st. anthony, lenton, on 21 may 2005.


lenton fair

king henry ii granted permission priory hold annual fair on feast of saint martin: 11 november. lenton fair ran 8 days before being extended 12 days. fair caused numerous disputes mayor , burgesses of town of nottingham no markets held within nottingham during period in lenton fair. in return people of nottingham given special rates hire booths @ fair. fair continued after demise of priory, though length gradually reduced. emphasis changed, , in 1584 described horse-fair when servants of mary, queen of scots attended. 17th century fair had acquired reputation great fair sorts of horses. in 19th century largely frequented farmers , horse dealers. fair ceased @ beginning of 20th century.


16th-20th centuries

from closure of priory in 1538, until late 18th century, lenton rural agricultural village.


in 1790s nottingham canal constructed, passing through village. led industrialisation , population growth, number of factories built , population increasing 893 3077 between 1801 , 1831. area known new lenton developed on agricultural land separate village accommodate expanding residential , industrial needs both village , neighbouring town nottingham. many other villages surrounding nottingham, many of residents involved in manufacture , trade of lace.


originally separate village, lenton became part of town of nottingham in 1877, when town s boundaries enlarged. nottingham became city part of diamond jubilee celebrations of queen victoria in 1897.
