the first issue of maple leaf coins face value of 50, 20, 10, , 5 canadian dollars announced on 11 july 1988, , minting began on 21 september of same year. official selling started on 17 november 1988 in 6 cities, , total volume of 64,200 ounces sold during first 6 weeks.

the platinum koala famous series of australian platinum coins. on 18 june 1987, australian government approved minting of platinum , silver coins, , accepted them legal tender. decision made based on success of gold coins issued year earlier. minting of platinum koala began in september 1988 in perth. marketing purposes, 2 ounce, 10 ounce, , 1 kilogram coins of silver, gold , platinum introduced in 1991; 1 kg coins world s heaviest bullion coins @ time.


the obverse, designed raphael maklouf issues, depicts elizabeth ii, , reverse contains image of koala. initials of reverse face designer james brown present on coins. annual series contain coins weighing 1/20 ounce 1 kilogram.



the platinum koala never reached popularity of american platinum eagle, because has not been advertised in us. investment platinum coins, platinum koalas sealed in protective plastic case. coins sold @ prices reflect current price of platinum, , not @ face value printed on coin. since november 1986, perth mint has used more 18 tonnes of platinum minting. 85% of coins sold abroad making gold corporation (owner of mint) 1 of australia s top 30 export earners.
