the zappeion used during 1896 summer olympics main fencing hall. decade later, @ 1906 intercalated games, used olympic village. served first host organizing committee (athoc) 2004 games 1998 1999 , served press center during 2004 games. in 1938, athens radio station, country s first national broadcaster, began operating in premises. building continued house national radio foundation until inauguration of house of radio in 1970.

a number of historical events have taken place @ zappeion, including signing of documents formalizing greece s accession european community in may, 1979, took place in building s marble-clad, peristyle main atrium.
