following marriage widow of james mccoy 1761, caudy intended acquire mccoy s 369 acres (149 ha; 0.577 sq mi) east of great north mountain in frederick county. caudy s claim mccoy s land disputed john capper, claimed have purchased mccoy s property before death. feud developed between caudy , capper; resolved thomas fairfax, 6th lord fairfax of cameron in november 1762. lord fairfax awarded 165 acres (67 ha; 0.258 sq mi) caudy , remainder of disputed land capper.


caudy never learned write in english; signed last , testament x mark in 1784. caudy died on march 15, 1784, , interred on property south of present-day capon bridge. according local tradition, caudy buried native american on either side of him. tradition says buried horse. site of caudy s interment located on property known hartford bealer farm. in 1930s, caudy s burial site attended local boy scouts troop, landscaped site , planted shrubbery. 1976, caudy s burial place marked 4 posts. in 2002, capon bridge ruritan club removed overgrown shrubs , erected white fence around caudy s interment site. project initiated capon bridge area residents roy giffin, ken edmonds, , roberta munske. ruritans purchased marble marker , erected on site @ 9 a.m. on november 15, 2003. burial site accessible , visible christian church road, west virginia secondary route 13.
