elizabeth jeffries born in 1890 on shores of hamilton inlet, near rigolet, labrador adam jeffries (another source calls father emo jeffery), inuit-scots trapper , wife. toddler, legs frozen , amputated below knee father axe. later, taken indian harbour hospital surgery create proper stumps, wilfred grenfell met when around 4 years old. nurse, took elizabeth temporary school @ halifax, nova scotia , 1902, writing letters in english.


by age ten, elizabeth able agilely move on leather pads father had fashioned her. in 1900, grenfell, renamed kirkina, took battle harbour hospital, remained 2 years. letter dated 9 november 1902 kirkina massachusetts family had sent jeffries doll, said legs completed within week dr. john mcpherson, part of mission staff. fashioned temporary wooden artificial legs, learned use. around 1903, kirkina received first pair of cork limbs donors in boston, massachusetts , when dr. mcpherson , wife left labrador later year, took them first boston , mexico. kirkina returned new york schooling 2 years , returned mcphersons in mexico. after 4 years in mexico, jeffries returned canada, in 1908 , lived nurse in forteau. in 1912, gaffney secured new set of legs kirkina through donors in u.s. gaffney continued use story of kirkina , other indigenous orphans garner donations charitable works.
