the church of saints flint in english style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch , square tower spire; contains 2 ancient brasses: restored in 1878 @ cost of £700 , grade ii* listed building. register dates year 1558. living rectory, yearly value £552, residence , 62 acres of glebe, in gift of magdalen college, cambridge, , held since 1853 rev. vincent raven m.a. late fellow, tutor, , president of college.


alongside schoolhouse, built in 1871. kelly s directory cambridgeshire, norfolk & suffolk, in 1883 claims school 80 children, average attendance 51, supported voluntary rate & school pence; miss esther quartermain, mistress .


gt. fransham mill

gt. fransham towermill four-storey mill stood @ mill farm described wide-towered mill, not high, thick & heavily built. mill used 4 patent sails power 2 pairs of french burr stones. pulley wheel set onto outside of mill allow auxiliary power via belt steam engine. in 1886, 2 windmills advertised let, along bake office on same site. mill had history of tragedy. norfolk news of 10 february 1866 reported on thursday in last week distressing accident accompanied fatal termination occurred in mr. perkins’ mill, unfortunate victim being respectable & steady married man in service, named crispin howard. ten minutes before eleven in forenoon mr. perkins left deceased following usual avocation. on return shortly after eleven, mr. perkins thought mill not working smoothly before left & on looking upwards discovered lifeless body of workman resting on beam had been elevated after having been drawn in & passed between 2 cog wheels. nature of wounds inflicted, obvious death must have been instantaneous. dead man fifty 5 years of age leaves widow & 3 children mourn loss & whom sympathy felt. @ inquest held on saturday, verdict found in circumstances returned – of accidental death . few years later king s lynn advertiser reported in april 1874 jonathan perkins, miller of gt fransham fatally injured on being thrown out of pony cart when hit gatepost. part of 20th century, end had come great fransham mill. dereham & fakenham times - 28 august 1909 reported sale of mill auction @ george hotel, east dereham, on 23 august 1909. mr. heyhoe next offered substantial built brick tower windmill situate @ mill farm, great fransham. contained patent sails, 2 pairs of stones, shafting gear , fittings in order , sold subject being removed occupation 11 october next, instructions trustees of court 1246 a. o. f. (swaffham). mr. crane purchaser £7. crane family owned wagon works @ gt fransham.


the brick tower has been long demolished mill farm house, dates second half of 16th century, still exists.


railway

the lynn & dereham railway given royal assent on 21 july 1845, opened in stages between 1846 , 1848, , later became part of great eastern railway. hunt s directory of east norfolk 1850 shows edgar skeit railway clerk . white s history, gazetteer, , directory, of norfolk 1854 lists edgar skeet being station master @ great fransham. spend on 30 years in role.


he christened on 20 august 1804 @ ubbeston,suffolk. william white s history, gazetteer, , directory of norfolk 1883 lists him still being stationmaster despite being 80 years old. died in september 1888 aged 84 , buried in north east corner of beeston churchyard.


in days, 4 passenger trains , 1 goods train pass through station each way daily,giving ten movements.great fransham halt between 2 major junctions of east dereham , swaffham. station had level crossing.


the original intention of company had been extend line great yarmouth, via norwich, plan blocked rival wymondham dereham scheme proposed norfolk railway


the line closed passenger , freight services eastern region of british railways on saturday, 7 september 1968.
