first world war

men of 12th (service) battalion, royal scots manning lip of mine crater @ meteren, 23 june 1918.


it formed in august 1914 27th brigade , part of 9th (scottish) division, first of kitchener s army divisions raised volunteers lord kitchener serve on western front during first world war. composed of 11th , 12th (service) battalions of royal scots, 6th (service) battalion royal scots fusiliers , 10th (service) battalion argyll , sutherland highlanders (princess louise s).


second world war

in 1939 brigade reformed, 27th infantry brigade, in territorial army part of 9th (highland) infantry division, 2nd line duplicate of 51st (highland) infantry division. when 51st (highland) division surrendered during battle of france in june 1940 9th (highland) division redesignated new 51st division. due 27th infantry brigade became 153rd infantry brigade , served 51st (highland) division in north africa, sicily, italy, , north-west europe 1942 1945.


post second world war

an orders group of battalion commanders of 27th british commonwealth infantry brigade in korea on 22 oct 1950, following battle of yongju. in foreground, seated left , leaning forward, brigadier basil aubrey coad. behind them officers of 3rd battalion, 187th airborne infantry regiment of army, had been extricated 3rd battalion, royal australian regiment.


the brigade reformed in 1948 , sent out hong kong, sent on korea @ outbreak of korean war, major kenneth muir of argylls awarded victoria cross in september 1950.


soon after arriving in korea, brigade in action, being involved in defence of pusan perimeter, on 29 august 1950, , un offensive link inchon landings. brigade joined in september 1950 australian contingent, 3rd battalion, royal australian regiment (3 rar), , in december 1950 2nd battalion, princess patricia s canadian light infantry. @ time brigade had few of support units normal feature of other commonwealth units in korea, , @ disadvantage in respect, being reliant on support units.


after further action during retreat yalu river, chinese winter offensive (including third battle of seoul in january 1951) , un counter-offensive. brigade joined specially raised 16 field regiment royal new zealand artillery in january 1951, , canadian infantry battalion in february. brigade s final action during battle of kapyong in april 1951. both argylls , middlesex regiment relieved , brigade disbanded, replaced constituted 28th british commonwealth infantry brigade, part of 1st commonwealth division.
