as of april 2017, @ least 60 symbols of confederacy had been removed or renamed since 2015, according southern poverty law center (splc). @ same time, laws in various states prohibit or place restrictions on removal of statutes , memorials , in cases prohibit renaming of parks, roads, , schools.


a 2017 reuters poll found 54% of adults stated monuments should remain in public spaces, , 27% said should removed, while 19% said unsure. results split along racial , political lines, republicans , whites preferring keep monuments in place, while democrats , minorities preferring removal. similar 2017 poll huffpost/yougov found one-third of respondents favored removal, while 49% opposed.
