5 july 2004: european intelligence officers claim 3 years before fake niger-iraq documents became public, sources number of countries including both human , electronic picked repeated conversations regarding illicit trade in uranium in niger. 1 of customers uranium discussed iraq. @ least 3 european intelligence aware of potential illegal trade in nigerien uranium between 1999 , 2001.
7 july 2004: senate select committee on intelligence releases report on u.s. intelligence community s prewar intelligence assessments on iraq. report documents , offers explanations many failures of u.s. intelligence community in estimates of iraqi weapons programs. plame , wilson , niger trip, 1 cia official said plame offered name , plame had written memo recommending wilson trip given connections nigerien officials , lots of french contacts. (page 39) vanity fair s january 2004 article double exposure states wilson representing concern seeking business related gold mining in niger, former french colony. information wilson gained in niger, cia , state department intelligence officials believed wilson s report boosted case iraq seeking uranium, joe wilson appeared spin story opposite way. cia continued mention, backing of british intelligence, iraq have sought uranium in niger.
31 july 2004: rove says on cnn well, i’ll repeat said abc news when whole thing broke number of months ago. didn’t know name , didn’t leak name. on abc, had denied having knowledge of plame leak.
