the claim house constructed george l. davenport, son of colonel george davenport, in 1832 or 1833 , believed oldest structure in city.


in 1832, chief keokuk , general winfield scott signed treaty end black hawk war. antoine leclaire, part french , part pottawattamie, served translator. generous portion of land given chief keokuk marguerite leclaire, antoine s wife, granddaughter of sac chief. keokuk stipulated antoine build home on exact spot treaty signed or forfeit land. antoine did so, finishing treaty house in spring of 1833. davenport established in 1836 antoine leclaire , named after friend colonel george davenport.


colonel davenport arrived in 1816 establishment of fort armstrong. acted sutler , or supplier, army s fort armstrong. fort armstrong located on northwestern tip of arsenal island purpose of monitoring fur trade traffic in area , keeping peace between local native american tribes. contributed organization , mapping out of community, known quad cities. aided in establishing plans first railroad bridge cross mississippi river.
