prior construction , dedication of holy trinity in 1847, church services attended british community held in british consulate. thomas chaye beale of dent & co. purchased , donated current site of holy trinity gift church. first church structure on site of poor quality; roof collapsing on 24 june 1850.


the neo-gothic design of current church sir george gilbert scott, modified william kidner, junior architect in scott s office due budget constraints , in effort accommodate growing congregation. foundation stone laid in 1866 , church dedicated in 1869. spire added original tower in 1901 although later removed during cultural revolution. holy trinity faces jerusalem, in west. when introduced in 1914, church had largest organ in asia instrument supplied j. w. walker & sons ltd of london.


before forced amalgamation of anglican denominations in mainland china lianghui in 1958, church served anglican cathedral of chung hua sheng kung hui, known holy trinity cathedral (simplified chinese: 圣三一主教座堂; traditional chinese: 聖三一主教座堂; pinyin: shèngsānyī zhujiaozuotáng), , oldest such cathedral in china. colloquially known red church . english speaking anglican church of shanghai in 1866-1949. had boys school attached, built in 1928. attended author jg ballard in youth, , features in novel, empire of sun. 1st shanghai baden-powell group based there. later, became cathedral of diocese of chekiang in 1930, still english speaking church.
