mantovani recorded decca until mid-1950s, , london records owned decca company. recorded in excess of 50 albums on label, many of top 40 hits. single tracks included song moulin rouge , reached number 1 in uk singles chart in 1953; cara mia (with him , orchestra backing david whitfield) in 1954; around world in 1957; , main theme exodus (ari s theme) in 1960. in united states, between 1955 , 1972, released more 40 albums 27 reaching top 40 , , 11 in top ten . biggest success came album film encores, attained number 1 in 1957.


similarly, mantovani plays music exodus , other great themes made top ten in 1961, on 1 million albums sold.


in 1958, mantovani , family bought holiday home in bournemouth in durley chine road, , in 1961 acquired new property in burton road (now part of poole). moved, finally, new home in martello road in poole.


mantovani starred in own syndicated television series, mantovani, produced in england , aired in united states in 1959. thirty-nine episodes filmed. mantovani made last recordings in mid-1970s.


he died @ care home in royal tunbridge wells kent. funeral held @ kent , sussex crematorium , cemetery on 8 april 1980.
