litchfield s plan yorkship village included narrow, winding residential streets (soon tree-lined), central village square, broad green boulevards, , brick duplexes , row homes both front , yards. architecturally, village considered example of american federal style. village character further emphasized physical isolation, since bordered on 3 sides newton creek.


construction began ground-breaking on may 1, 1918. united states shipping board, emergency fleet corporation bore estimated $11 million cost of construction, required local community provide utilities, fire hydrants, , fire , police protection. cost of services beyond means of haddon township, ceded yorkship village city of camden on july 8, 1918.


at end of war emergency fleet corporation began selling properties 1,579 housed, 59 apartments, 13 stores, hotel, gymnasium , miscellaneous buildings unsold @ start of 1921. end of fiscal year 1924 twelve houses, sewage system , plant, water system, bridge, public squares , parks had been sold.


it became camden s 14th ward. though yorkship village renamed fairview in 1922, original elementary school located near square still operating yorkship school, , of original streets still named famous naval vessels.
