rafiq hariri assassination

ministry of interior soldier guarding site of attack killed former prime minister hariri

a massive explosion on 14 february 2005, killed former lebanese prime minister rafiq hariri in beirut, near st. george hotel. killed former minister of economy, bassel fleihan, , 19 other people. 220 others wounded.

a group calling nasra & jihad group in greater syria claimed responsibility blast. group had not been heard before. tape aired al jazeera showed bearded man, believed palestinian named ahmad abu adas, claiming attack. adas apartment raided remains missing; however, thought forced admit plot , killed planned assassination.

according united nations report detlev mehlis, released 20 october 2005, blast result of truck bomb. security camera captured white mitsubishi truck driving near hariri s convoy moments before blast; investigators determined truck carried explosives, estimated @ 1,000 kg. since hariri s convoy had jamming devices meant block remote control signals, attack carried out using suicide bomber. report cited witness said bomber iraqi led believe target iraqi prime minister iyad allawi, had been in beirut days before.

the report concluded top syrian , lebanese officials planned assassination beginning in mid-2004.

new jdeideh bombing

a car bomb exploded in new jdeideh suburb of beirut on 19 march 2005. blast happened in part-commercial, part-residential area, , wounded eleven people. reports said driver had tried park in front of bingo hall, , turned away , parked next apartment building instead.

kaslik bombing

on 23 march, bomb left in leather bag exploded @ entrance of kaslik shopping center in jounieh. 3 janitors, 2 indians , pakistani, killed, , 2 sri lankans , 2 lebanese injured. roof of mall collapsed.

ali ramez tohme assassination attempt

the car of ali ramez tohme, journalist , president of dar al-haitham journalism, printing , press, bombed on 15 september in area of mazboud. tohme escaped assassination attempt. there speculation attack motivated article written tohme defending rafiq hariri or book on hariri.

sad el bouchrieh bombing

on 26 march, car loaded explosives , parked between 2 factories exploded in sad el bouchrieh area of beirut, wounding 6 people. caused blaze destroyed several workshops.

broummana bombing

on 1 april, bomb ripped through rizk plaza in broummana resort village, 20 km (12 mi) east of beirut. twelve people injured.

jounieh bombing

on 7 may, car bomb exploded between christian sawt al mahaba radio station , mar yuhanna church in jounieh. radio station destroyed , church suffered major damage. twenty-two people wounded.

samir kassir assassination

anti-syrian journalist samir kassir assassinated on 2 june when bomb detonated in car outside home in beirut s ashrafiyeh district, largely christian residential area. kassir front-page columnist nahar newspaper, wrote columns criticizing pro-syrian government.

george hawi assassination

george hawi, former lebanese communist party leader , critic of israel, died when car exploded driving through beirut s wata musaitbi district on 21 june.

elias murr assassination attempt

a car bomb wounded lebanese defense minister, , son-in-law of emile lahoud, elias murr, motorcade drove through beirut s christian suburb of antelias on 12 july. 2 people killed , 12 others injured. attack unique in series of bombings in murr considered pro-syrian figure.

monot bombing

on 22 july, bomb exploded in car parked in front of restaurant on monot street in beirut, wounding twelve people. bomb estimated 50 lb.

zalka bombing

in christian neighborhood of zalka, on 22 august, bomb placed between shopping center , hotel damaged shops , windows, wounding 8 people. consisted of 20 30 kg of tnt , set on timer.

jeitawi bombing

an explosion, believed caused car bomb, rocked largely christian area of ashrafieh on 17 september. 1 person killed , 23 injured. 2 cars blown , buildings near blast severely damaged.

may chidiac assassination attempt

christian journalist , critic of syria may chidiac injured when bomb exploded got car in jounieh on 25 september. lost left leg , arm. chidiac news anchor @ lebanese broadcasting corporation.

gebran tueni assassination

a prominent anti-syrian journalist , lawmaker, gebran tueni, killed car bomb on 12 december. had returned france day earlier, had been staying fear of assassination. 2 other people killed — driver , passerby — when car bomb exploded motorcade drove through mkalles, industrial suburb of beirut. 30 people wounded in bombing, , @ least 10 vehicles destroyed.

on 28 december 2005, lebanese newspaper nahar reported had received statement signed strugglers unity , freedom in al-sham, group claimed responsibility death of former editor gibran tueni car bomb on 12 december. statement said outgoing uniiic chairman mehlis lucky escape death , threatened new chairman assassination if implicated syria.
