the glaciers carved yosemite valley left many hanging valleys spawned waterfalls pour valley. of waterways fed these falls carved hanging valleys steep cascades exception of bridalveil fall. bridalveil creek still leaps valley edge of precipice, although edge has moved alcove original edge of valley. while yosemite falls seem fall category, original course took yosemite creek down gorge west of current location. primary source of bridalveil falls ostrander lake, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) south.


in brisk wind, falling water blown sideways, , when flow light, may not reach ground directly below. because of this, ahwahneechee native americans called waterfall pohono , means spirit of puffing wind .
