early years in italy

raffaello squarise born in vicenza, italy, father, antonio squarise, worked sculptor. attended istituto musicale, turin, 6 years, studying violin under francesco bianchi , pietro bertuzzi, , composition under carlo pedrotti. around time played in orchestra of teatro regio. squarise graduated in 1875, completing miniature symphony in c minor final examination. on returning vicenza completed further study under francesco canneti. afterwards served military bandmaster @ contarina , municipal bandmaster @ arzignano.

australian years

squarise left italy australia in 1882, arriving in melbourne in august year. spent of next year violinist in touring opera orchestras of williamson, garner , musgrove company, , cagli , paoli opera company. arrived in adelaide in july 1883 heywood s minstrel troupe , decided settle in city. established performing , teaching partnership fellow italian faustino ziliani , featured in many local concerts.

squarise established squarise s band , led formation of south australian militia band in 1886, squarise appointed lieutenant bandmaster. band enjoyed patronage of governor william robinson, , squarise s violin pupils included robinson s daughter. squarise associated adelaide string quartet club, st. francis xavier s cathedral, , various local music societies. compositions during period included polka opening of adelaide arcade, funeral march in memory of wilhelm of germany, , battle fantasia battle of sedan. proposed opera, magic dice, did not come fruition.

in 1887 squarise married camille villanis (née chapuis), swiss widow of italian vigneron, @ residence of adolph marvale in norwood.

new zealand years

squarise arrived in dunedin, new zealand, in september 1889 take position of leader of orchestra of new zealand , south seas exhibition. featured soloist , symphony in c minor performed on several occasions. 1 of judges @ exhibition s brass band contest

the exhibition concluded in may 1890 , squarise decided settle in dunedin. year established otago conservatorio of music in association german pianist arthur barmeyer. during next several years squarise organised chamber concerts, served conductor of dunedin engineers band , dunedin garrison band, , established dunedin citizens band. conductor of dunedin liedertafel , briefly choirmaster @ st. joseph s cathedral.

some of squarise s piano compositions published during 1890s , in 1894 composed comic opera, fabian, libretto donald cargill. fabian s ten-night season critical , popular success, squarise did not compose further operas.

in 1904 squarise formed dunedin philharmonic society, amateur orchestra of fifty seventy players. string players own pupils. society performed new zealand premieres of many orchestral works, including tchaikovsky s symphony pathetique (1905). featured squarise s own compositions, including symphony in c minor, numerous marches, , patriotic battle fantasia military caprice (1914). squarise continued conduct orchestra until disbanded in 1933.

in 1905 squarise elected president of otago society of musicians, position held 8 years.

squarise retired public life in july 1933, @ age of 76. complimentary concert held mark occasion final concert of dunedin philharmonic society. squarise s wife camille died in 1941, , squarise moved roxburgh, central otago, live friends. died there on 15 april 1945.
