1960

1960 saw ambassador lineup totally reskinned, wearing new fenders, hood, deck lid, door skins, roofline, grille, taillights, bumpers, windshield, , backlight. significant lower hood line, lower windshield cowl, simplified side trim, egg crate grill, while tailfins reduced in height , canted either side making modern , integrated appearance. overall effect rather fresh, new roof had lower, lighter look, complement lower fins , grille.


all ambassadors came equipped american motors 327 cu in (5.4 l) v8, first time available in 2 versions. first original 270 hp (201 kw; 274 ps), 360 lb·ft (490 n·m) of torque, performance version equipped 4-barrel carburetor , 9.7:1 compression ratio, required premium fuel, , second economy version running on regular gasoline making 250 hp (186 kw), 340 lb·ft (460 n·m) of torque, equipped 2-barrel carburetor , 8.7:1 compression ratio.


ambassadors came unique compound curved windshield cut roof. improved visibility, did away “knee knocker” dogleg design of amc s first generation wrap-around windshield, , resulted in stiffer unitized structure. 1960 ambassador had low cowl compound windshield afforded excellent visibility. ambassador offered in higher end custom or entry level super trim levels. 1960 ambassadors came new instrument cluster under padded cowl, illuminated controls lights, wipers, fan, , defrost functions. 1960 ambassadors continued enclosed drive shaft (torque tube) , coil springs @ 4 corners, although suspension revised resulting in better handling. top-of-the-line ambassador models came standard individual airliner reclining front seats had more luxurious fabrics in previous years.

the 1961 ambassador continued previous year s 117-inch (2,972 mm) basic unitized platform, received unusual new front-end styling overseen amc s in-house design department headed edmund anderson. new face consisted of trapezoid grille , headlights floated in body-colored panel, while front fenders arched downward , forward of leading edge of hood. different else on market, amc s marketing department promoted european. while new meant distinguish ambassador lower-priced ramblers, neither consumer success nor received in automotive press. overall sales fell entire industry experiencing recession. hardtop sedan , wagon models did not return 1961.
