all canadian banknotes underwent major redesign in 1991, partially incorporate of latest anti-forgery methods. notes continue improved, design revealed on august 25, 2004, , placed circulation on september 29, 2004. notes printed on paper composed of pure cotton @ 2 ottawa companies contracted purpose. canadian bank note company , ba international inc., part of giesecke & devrient gmbh group of companies.


each note in 1991 series sprinkled special green ink dots, called planchettes, glow when exposed ultraviolet light. ink can scraped off, worn notes tend have fewer, if any, glowing dots. these replaced more permanent ultraviolet-detected threads in new notes, ink imprint of coat of arms.


canadian journey series

introduced in 2004 , circulated until replacement in 2012, canadian journey series 20-dollar note predominantly green. face featured portrait of elizabeth ii, queen of canada, royal arms of canada, , picture of centre block of parliament buildings. security features visible face included holographic stripe along left side, depicting number 20 alternated maple leaves; watermark of queen s portrait; , broken-up number 20, resolved when backlit. depicted artworks bill reid, notably sculptures raven , first men , spirit of haida gwaii; had quotation gabrielle roy. had visible security feature: interleaved metallic strip, reading 20 can repeatedly along length. yellow dots representing eurion constellation found on both sides (and on 2001 series notes). textured printing, 2004 design incorporates special tactile feature similar braille dots blind indicating denomination. 2004 $20 note awarded bank note of year international bank note society in 2005.
