nauru raised coral atoll positioned in nauru basin of pacific ocean, on part of pacific plate formed @ mid oceanic ridge @ 132 ma. mid eocene (35mya) oligocene times submarine volcano built on hotspot, , formed seamount composed of basalt. seamount on 4300 metres high. hotspot simultaneous major pacific plate reorganisation. volcano eroded sealevel , coral atoll grew on top thickness of 500 metres. coral near surface has been dated 5 mya 0.3 mya. original limestone has been dolomitised magnesium sea water. coral raised above sea level 30 metres, , dolomite limestone outcrop eroded in classic karst style pinnacles 20 metres high. @ least depth of 55 metres below sea level, limestone has been dissolved forming cavities, sinkholes , caves. holes on topside of island filled phosphate layer several metres thick.


anibare bay formed underwater collapse of east side of volcano. buada lagoon formed solution of limestone when sea level lower, followed collapse.


nauru moving @ 104 mm per year north west along pacific plate.


freshwater can found in buada lagoon, , in brackish ponds @ escarpment base in ijuw , anabar in northeast. there underground lake in moqua cave in southeast of island.
