in 1956, u.s. states , canadian provinces came agreement american association of motor vehicle administrators, automobile manufacturers association , national safety council standardized size license plates vehicles (except motorcycles) @ 6 inches (15 cm) in height 12 inches (30 cm) in width, standardized mounting holes. 1955 (dated 1956) issue first alaska license plate complied these standards.

all plates issued since 1981 remain valid proper validation.
