on 17 december 1949, became first television transmitter broadcast outside london , home counties, bringing bbc television viewers outside of south-east of england first time.
a new mast built around 1983 replace original structure, support new mixed-polarisation fm antennas.
a 240.2m temporary mast erected alongside original mast in spring of 2009 work proceed in raising height of original mast 31m (to total height of 270.5m). after 4 years in service , year after completion of digital switch over, temporary mast removed during august 2013.
all analogue tv transmissions ceased on 21 september 2011, part of digital switchover. made 1 of oldest transmitters in country formally end analogue broadcasts.
