origin

the area of brixen has been settled since upper paleolithic (8th millennium bc). other settlements late stone age have been found , in 15 bc, area conquered romans, had main settlement in nearby säben (sabiona). held until around 590, when occupied bavarians.

the first mention of brixen dates 901 in document issued king of germany, louis iii child, in territory called prihsna assigned zacharias, bishop of säben. time passed, prihsna turned current name of brixen. bishops moved here säben in 992, after cathedral had been finished.


in 1039, bishop of brixen, poppo, elevated pope emperor henry iii. reign lasted 23 days. yet in same century, brixen became seat of independent ecclesiastical principate which, in following years, struggled existence against neighbouring county of tyrol. in 1115, first line of walls encircling brixen completed.


the bishopric secularized in 1803 , annexed austrian empire. between 1851 , 1855, czech journalist , writer karel havlíček borovský exiled austrian government brixen. after end of world war i, brixen annexed italy.


coat-of-arms

the oldest coat of arms dates 1297 lamb, known 1304 symbol of lamb. on 13 november 1928, shield city walls , gate on lawn in upper half , lamb in lower adopted. emblem turned argent lamb or halo on gules background; right foreleg supports flag gules cross. emblem granted in 1966.
