the last ruler of jammu , kashmir maharaja hari singh, ascended throne in 1925. made primary education compulsory in state, introduced laws prohibiting child marriage , threw open places of worship low castes. hari singh member of churchill s british war cabinet in wwii, , supplied troops allies.


singh s reign saw accession of jammu & kashmir newly independent indian union in 1947. manoeuvered maintain independence playing off india , pakistan against each other. there armed movement against maharaja s rule in poonch district of jammu, when troops unable control these fighters , troops retreated jammu, in october 1947, singh appealed india help. acceded india, though there considerable controversy on @ point, , whether or not accession included sovereignty of state.


in june 1952, singh s rule terminated state government of indian-administered kashmir. son yuvraj (crown prince) karan singh abdicated , elected sadr-e-riyasat ( president of province ) , governor of state in 1964.
