shortly after debut, callihan became member of crew faction, consisted of jon moxley, dick rick , pepper parks. callihan began regularly competing heartland wrestling association, , faced wrestlers including chad collyer , nigel mcguinness. competed in chikara s 2008 young lions tournament did not win tournament. advanced finals of 2008 ted petty invitational tournament victories on chris hero, eddie kingston , 2 cold scorpio. on september 28, 2008, competed hwa heavyweight championship in three-way match, involving drake younger, lost jake crist. on november 26, 2008, eliminated hwa heavyweight champion jake crist in thanksgiving eve eight-man tag team elimination match. in rematch on october 1, 2008, again defeated jake crist. in 2011, callihan made final of first heartland cup tournament against jake crist.

on may 1, 2010, callihan debuted evolve @ evolve 3: rise or fall in winning effort against adam cole. on july 23, @ evolve 4: danielson vs fish, callihan gained second victory defeating arik cannon via submission. matches against wrestlers including zack sabre, jr., brodie lee, ar fox, bobby fish, , dave fit finlay @ evolve 9 followed. on april 5, 2013, callihan took part in tournament determine inaugural evolve champion, made finals, before losing ar fox.

on july 24, 2010, callihan made debut dragon gate usa, losing jimmy jacobs in dark match. after wrestling several matches promotion through rest of year, callihan placed in first angle on april 3, 2011, @ open ultimate gate, when , arik cannon walked out on six–way match. later in event, callihan , cannon announced forming tag team named d.u.f. (dirty ugly fucks) , defeated dark city fight club (jon davis , kory chavis) in first match together. on june 5 @ enter dragon 2011, callihan , arik cannon joined pinkie sanchez, , picked major win on tag team of open dream gate champion masaaki mochizuki , susumu yokosuka.

on november 11, 2008 callihan made ring of honor debut @ escalation in losing effort in four-corner survival match involving go shiozaki, rhett titus, , grizzly redwood. callihan appeared on inaugural episode of ring of honor wrestling on hdnet, aired on march 21, losing kenny king.

on october 23, 2012, johnston wrestled dark match wwe, in defeated johnny curtis. in april 2013, reported johnston undergoing medical tests promotion, , on may 27 dragon gate usa confirmed johnston had signed wwe.
