history , formation

plans nmmu first revealed in 2002, minister of education, kader asmal. proposal part of larger plan restructure higher education in south africa. first step in merger came incorporation of vista pe upe on january 2, 2004 followed merger of pe technikon , upe on january 1, 2005.


nmmu formed in 2005 through merger of port elizabeth technikon, , university of port elizabeth. in 2004, prior merger, upe had taken control of port elizabeth campus of vista university. pe technikon had satellite campus in george, merged. first chancellor of university chief justice pius langa , justice ronnie pillay first chairperson of council. dr rolf stumpf first vice-chancellor , chief executive officer of university, succeeded professor derrick swartz on january 1, 2008.


the name of university formally changed nelson mandela metropolitan university nelson mandela university on 20 july 2017.

pe technikon had roots in port elizabeth art school, founded in 1882 , oldest art school in south africa, , situated in russell road, central. later renamed college advanced technical education (cate). college moved university way in summerstrand in 1974, , became pe technikon in 1979. port elizabeth teachers training college located in 2nd avenue, summerstrand. taken on pe technikon in 1994, , became known college campus.


saasveld forestry college founded tokai school forest apprentices in 1912 in cape town. school offshoot of south african college schools. in 1932, moved current location, between george , knysna. campus taken on pe technikon department of agriculture in 1985.


the algoa college of education situated in struandale, approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) away summerstrand. became part of pe technikon in 2001, , known algoa campus. in 2001, george campus added purchasing hurteria building in city centre.


at time of merger, pe technikon had more 10 000 students. institution s last chancellor former speaker of parliament dr frene ginwala, last vice-chancellor prof hennie snyman , last chair of council being mr clive stanton.


university of port elizabeth (upe)

upe country s first dual-medium (english , afrikaans) residential university. came being on january 31, adoption parliament of act 1 of 1964. first academic year commenced on march 1, 1965. situated in series of buildings on bird street, in historic central district, upe moved modern, purpose-built campus – incorporating residences, sports complex , towering main building – in summerstrand in 1974. campus officially opened in august 1975 , final move bird street came in 1979 opening of science blocks @ summerstrand. university retained of bird street buildings , these became centre of community outreach activities.


built on 830 ha of land donated port elizabeth city council, campus declared nature reserve in 1983.


at time of merger, upe had more 9 000 contact students , 5 000 distance education students. last chancellor dr brigalia bam, last vice-chancellor dr rolf stumpf , last chair of council mr trevor jennings.


vista university (vista pe)

vista founded on 1981. port elizabeth campus built in 1982. subsequently, 7 decentralized contact tuition campuses established, centred on township areas need accessible , affordable higher education urgent. in 1982 port elizabeth campus consisted of small, prefabricated building patched between national road uitenhage , edge of zwide township. location opened access higher education many students socially , financially disadvantaged backgrounds.


the campus had first academic year in 1983 , in 1991 permanent brick structure completed. later additions such conference hall , arena provided accessible facilities surrounding community large events. seating 5 000, arena eastern cape’s largest indoor venue.


initially focused on upgrading of teachers through education faculty, in subsequent growth vista far surpassed narrow field of expertise cut out it, producing graduates in business, law, science , humanities.


at time of merger, vista pe had approximately 2 000 students , led acting campus principal prof miemie struwig.


with first academic year in 1983. taken on upe.
