after 1449, town isolated venetian exclave in ottoman territory, ottomans completed conquest of rest of epirus , aetolia-acarnania. town important venice, secured trade through corinthian gulf, , republic took care erect strong fortifications secure possession. in end, fortress fell ottomans in 1499, during second ottoman–venetian war.
