the first model of valentine; production vickers, metro cammell , birmingham railway tank had riveted hull, powered aec a189 135 hp petrol engine , equipped 2-pounder gun , coaxial besa machine gun. two-man turret forced commander act loader.

until valentine name adopted in june 1941, known tank, infantry, mark iii* . model used aec a190 131 hp 6-cylinder diesel engine. increase range in desert, auxiliary jettisonable external fuel tank installed left of engine compartment.

modifications turret design — moving front turret plate forward , larger rear bulge — gave room loader ease duties of commander. side armour reduced 60 mm (2.4 in) 50 mm (2.0 in) save weight.

canadian-built version of mk iv; known tank, infantry mark iii***. used canadian , american mechanical parts , gmc diesel engine. late production vehicles had cast glacis detail, along more use of cast sections instead of fabricated ones. first fifteen produced 7.92 mm besa coaxial machine-gun, thereafter replaced coaxial 0.30-inch browning machine-gun.

valentine mk v, ix , mk xi, made amphibious use of nicholas straussler s duplex drive . conversions metro-cammell of 625 tanks delivered in 1943–1944. used crews training m4 sherman dd tanks normandy landings training in italy , india. few used in italy in 1945.

valentine 6-pounder anti-tank mounting

valentine flame-throwers
two valentine tanks modified carry flame-throwers , tested petroleum warfare department determine system best tank-mounted flame projector. 1 used projector pressurised slow burning cordite charges (designed ministry of supply) , 1 designed aec pwd using projector operated compressed hydrogen gas. both carried flame-thrower fuel in trailer , flame projector mounted on hull front. trials started in 1942 , showed gas-operated system better. test installation developed crocodile equipment churchill crocodile flame-thrower used in north west europe campaign in 1944–45.
valentine 9.75-inch flame mortar
experimental vehicle turret replaced fixed heavy mortar intended fire 25 lb tnt incendiary shells demolish concrete emplacements. trials petroleum warfare dept, 1943–45. effective range 400 yd (370 m) (maximum range 2,000 yd (1,800 m)).
