marina mohnen born in bitburg on 31 october 1978. mohnen majored in economics (business education).

mohnen began playing basketball when eleven, in 1999 suffered severe anterior cruciate ligament injury. took wheelchair basketball 4.5 point player, playing home town team in bitburg, subsequently moved koblenz, bonn, , cologne, lives again after stint in italy. part of rsc köln 2004 2009, played important role in rise of team. moved italian club s. stefano sport in santo stefano, playing in italy 2009 2011, after returned rbc köln.

mohnen joined german national team in 2005. went on win european championships in 2005, 2007, 2009 , 2011. bronze medallists @ world championships in amsterdam in 2006, , silver medallists @ world championships in birmingham in 2010.

in september 2008, mohnen participated in 2008 summer paralympics in beijing, first, german team beaten in gold medal game united states, , took home paralympic silver medals. after paralympics, team s performance considered impressive enough named national team of year , , received silver laurel leaf, germany s highest sporting honour, german president horst koehler. mohnen beat olympic gold medallists britta heidemann, marion rodewald , oksana chusovitina, , long-distance runner sabrina mockenhaupt, take title of cologne s sportswoman of year 2008.

mohnen part of team won european championship sixth time in row in nazareth in 2011, thereby qualifying 2012 summer paralympic games in london. part of team s preparation, toured united states , australia. mohnen captain of team in london. in gold medal match in london, team faced australia women s national wheelchair basketball team, had defeated them 48–46 in sydney few months earlier, in front of capacity crowd of on 12,000 @ north greenwich arena, included mohnen s mother kati , sister sonja. german team had been undefeated point, had started in games against united states , china, winning both games six-point margins, , seemed play best basketball in final minutes of game. defeated australians 44–58 win gold medal, first germany had won in women s wheelchair basketball since 1984, 28-year period. mohnen contributed eleven points. awarded silver laurel leaf president joachim gauck in november 2012, , named team of year 2012. bitburg honoured mohnen entering name golden book of city.
