his longtime supervisor capt. frank mcneil (dan frazer). later in series, mcneil promoted chief of detectives in manhattan. kojak commander of manhattan south precinct s detective squad. squad includes 1 of favorite employees: young plainclothes officer, det. bobby crocker (kevin dobson). detective stavros (played telly s real-life brother george savalas, used name demosthenes screen credit; under real name, savalas received production associate credit during seasons), detective saperstein (mark russell), , detective rizzo (vince conti), gave kojak support. roger robinson appeared in 12 episodes detective gil weaver.

the show cancelled after 5 seasons in 1978, due falling ratings. reruns of kojak became successful in syndication , on tv land. years after series ended, savalas reprised role in 2 tv movies, belarus file (1985) (an adaptation of john loftus book belarus secret) , price of justice (1987) (based on dorothy uhnak s novel investigation). kojak not character in either book.


for 1989–1990 television season, kojak revived series of 5 telefilms aired on abc. these films saw now-inspector kojak lead nypd s major crimes squad. andre braugher cast young detective assigned kojak s command.


telly savalas cast member appear in every episode of original series, , stayed throughout entire run.
