the opera company opened 2004–2005 season in 1,119 seat california theatre, former vaudeville , film theatre designed weeks , day. opened in 1927 fox california theatre (originally 1,848 seats), movie palace said finest theater in california. magnificent jazz age décor, part of wave of ornate theaters built define downtowns on country in 1920s , 1930s.


for 50 years theatre showed films, until closure in 1973. left vacant , dilapidated many years, reopened in 2004 after $75 million restoration project packard humanities institute , san jose redevelopment agency. came big relief local historians, feared building demolished many other historic buildings in city center. in 2004, california theatre reopened major performing arts facility designed both live stage performances , motion pictures. new theatre filled modern amenities in setting of meticulously restored 1920 s opulence. has been called 1 of beautiful theatres in state, , home of opera san jose , symphony silicon valley. plays host annually cinequest film festival.


in 2004 team san jose took on management of facility , promotes venues , theatre favorite place hold events. lavish conference facility additional meeting rooms, , state-of-the-art audio , video technology, has been added original structure.
