the uniforms of athletic band have varied extensively throughout history. military band wore same uniform marching band s former concert , travel uniform, until 1980s. military band wore following alterations on uniforms:

hat: dark blue peaked visor cap, same marching band, instead of wearing eagle ohio emblem, simpler device letters rotc surrounded wreath worn. no plume worn in hat.
jacket: dark blue 4 buttoned jacket simulated pockets. on shoulders patches, 1 contained buckeye leaf , read ohio state university buckeyes. other patch of ohio state university seal. jacket same worn marching band. white shirt , black tie worn. however, military band wore red shoulder cord on left shoulder , white belt silver buckle worn around waist. these worn in lieu of crossbelts. gloves not worn uniform.
pants: dark blue trousers.
shoes: black patent leather military style dress shoes. no spats worn.

the activities band, later buckeye bands, concert band (audition ensemble music majors), wore same style of band uniform without hat.

the marching band received new uniforms in 1988. these uniforms added more color otherwise solid navy blue hats , jackets. solid color uniforms reserved military band until 1992, when uniforms retired, , replaced red polo shirts gray dress pants. various combinations of polos, t-shirts, jackets, , pants played with. several notable combinations included gray t-shirt ohio state athletic logo athletic band printed below it, worn khaki pants; zippered windbreaker in black, white, , red, small athletic logo on left breast , large 1 on back, worn black pants; , current short sleeve red polo osu athletic band s official logo, worn black pants. during spring, black baseball cap athletic band logo worn both homage military roots of band (i.e. headgear worn while in uniform while outdoors) , practical reasons of shielding eyes sun during outdoor performances. in 2013, marching band given significant increase in funding, being used athletic band. first time in many years, athletic band given polo shirts free of charge.

drum major uniforms

today, drum major wears polo shirt , white pants contrast athletic band s pants. no headgear worn drum major during performances.

director uniforms

the directing staff has worn various styles of uniforms throughout history of marching , military bands. typically, staff wear same uniforms both bands. uniforms took on style similar u.s. navy’s double-breasted dress jacket in 1940s , 1950s. directing staff wore sleeve stripes in style similar u.s. navy. directing staff wore 2 lapel pins matching lyre-shaped insignia. these gold along of buttons on uniforms. directors wore same hat marching band minus plume.

the uniform changed have sleeve ranking structure under dr. paul droste. uniform had 3 stripes denoting him director, , associate director, dr. jon woods, had 2 stripes. dr. droste first use military style hat “scrambled eggs” visor (which acorns , leaves).

after military band retired, director uniforms have become more of guideline hard , fast rule. exception of spring athletic band, directing staff typically wear ohio state polo of type, , dress pants. business casual attire worn director. during spring, directing staff wear white polo shirts osu athletic band logo , black pants. no headgear worn directors during performances.
