the tennessee river enters benton county/humphreys county area south, absorbs duck river , beech river, , proceeds northwestward 100 miles (160 km) before emptying ohio river. kentucky lake, created completion of kentucky dam in 1944, covers 184-mile (296 km) stretch of river between kentucky dam (near paducah) , pickwick landing dam, near tennessee-alabama border south. nathan bedford forrest state park situated along western bank of kentucky lake, approximately 80 miles (130 km) upstream kentucky dam.


pilot knob pinnacle of ridge extends approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) northwestwardly harmon creek valley, along park s northwestern boundary. of park s topography consists of ridges , hollows run parallel pilot knob ridge. park s offices located on slopes of pilot knob, , tennessee river folklife center , hiking trailheads located @ summit.


state route 191, terminates atop pilot knob, connects park interstate 40 , u.s. route 70 south.
