after logging era ended, heavily-exploited forest partly abandoned. u.s. federal government established ottawa national forest in 1931, forest did not reach full size until after 2 large land purchases in 1933 , 1935. in 1935 national forest reached maximum size of 1,026,329 acres (4,105 km²). after privatizations, forest reached current 1.0 million acre (4,000 km²) extent.
