the ottawa national forest home several clans of ojibwa people coexisted forest s numerous rocky wetlands. harvested many of region s mammals, particularly beaver, pelts, , sold them traders canada , eastern united states, such traders of american fur company. after fur trade declined, nation sold of forest in 1854 treaty of la pointe. part of nation used of proceeds fur trapping purchase lands around lac vieux desert, descendants remain today lac vieux desert band of lake superior chippewa.

after logging era ended, heavily-exploited forest partly abandoned. u.s. federal government established ottawa national forest in 1931, forest did not reach full size until after 2 large land purchases in 1933 , 1935. in 1935 national forest reached maximum size of 1,026,329 acres (4,105 km²). after privatizations, forest reached current 1.0 million acre (4,000 km²) extent.


during years after world war ii, growing automobile tourism made possible americans of groups visit , enjoy ottawa national forest, , visitation increased.
