the gene psmb1 encodes member of proteasome b-type family, known t1b family, 20s core beta subunit. gene tightly linked tbp (tata-binding protein) gene in human , in mouse, , transcribed in opposite orientation in both species. gene has 6 exons , locates @ chromosome band 6q27.

the human protein proteasome subunit beta type-1 26.5 kda in size , composed of 241 amino acids. calculated theoretical pi of protein 8.27.


complex assembly

the proteasome multicatalytic proteinase complex highly ordered 20s core structure. barrel-shaped core structure composed of 4 axially stacked rings of 28 non-identical subunits: 2 end rings each formed 7 alpha subunits, , 2 central rings each formed 7 beta subunits. 3 beta subunits (beta1, beta2, , beta5) each contains proteolytic active site , has distinct substrate preferences. proteasomes distributed throughout eukaryotic cells @ high concentration , cleave peptides in atp/ubiquitin-dependent process in non-lysosomal pathway.
