Deep Space 4 .2F Space Technology 4 Champollion (spacecraft)
champollion (original concept)
champollion revived under nasa s new millennium program deep space 4 / space technology 4, again joint project of nasa , cnes. in version, champollion stand-alone project consisting of orbiter , lander, focus shifted engineering validation of new technologies rather pure science.
as of march 1999, baseline mission launch in april 2003, reaching comet tempel 1 in 2006. sample return element of mission @ point contingent on sufficient funding/resources, possibly being replaced demonstration of related capabilities.
the lander approximately 1.5m high weighing 160 kg; autonomously navigate comet 50 km altitude , anchor spike. planned payload included:
charge, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer
circle, cameras/microscope/ir spectrometer
civa, panoramic cameras
cppp, physical properties probes driven cometary surface
satm drill mechanism
gamma ray/neutron spectrometer
the orbiter carry cameras , dust monitor.
later in 1999, space technology 4 scaled single spacecraft no sample return; cancelled entirely on july 1, 1999, due budgetary constraints.
