the hilton head , beaufort papers of march 24, have following items:
it remembered after reduction of fort wagner , demolition of fort sumter, last fall, gen. gillmore announced medals of honor presented such enlisted men had distinguished gallant conduct during siege. have been struck, , samples here, though entire number scarcely ready delivery sooner 2 or 3 weeks. there 5 hundred candidates (500) honor, each of whom have name neatly engraved on buckle medal attached. medal of bronze, size of silver dollar of blessed memory, , bears upon obverse in bold relief, accurate representation of fort sumter @ termination of first bombardment, taken original drawing mr. w.t. crane, legend fort sumter, aug. 23, 1863, whole encircled border of stars. upon reverse in inscription, in raised letters: gallant , meritorious conduct. presented q.a. gillmore, major-general. name of gen. gillmore fac simile of autograph. medals beautiful in design, , neatly , made. come establishment of ball, black & co., new-york city.
