pogy put sea on 22 april 1975 local operations. on 27 april 1975, 5 nautical miles (9.3 km) off coast of oahu in hawaiian islands, lookout sighted capsized 15-foot (4.6 meters) sailboat drifting out sea, , crew rescued boat s owner. had been in water hour, , injuries scrapes , bruises incurred while being hoisted rough side of submarine. same day, pogy conducted sinkex 1-75, test of warshot mark 48 torpedo against target submarine. intercepted decommissioned hulk of submarine uss carbonero (ss-337) drifting on surface , carrying noisemaker torpedo home on acoustically. pogy verified positions using periscope, dived 200 feet (61 meters) shoot torpedo. interior communications electrician ic1(ss) joseph j. varese, had earned submarine warfare insignia on carbonero, , leading petty officer of pogy s interior communications division, given honor of throwing firing switch shoot torpedo. few minutes later, pogy transmitted traditional message: sighted submarine sank same .




having surfaced in arctic ice pack, crew members pogy assemble topside deck enclosure provide protection elements while water samples collected , cataloged in 1996.


on 25 august 1996, pogy deployed in support of scicex-96 experiments. in october 1996, transited bering strait , began collecting thousands of water samples on hundred locations under polar ice cap in arctic ocean. continuously recorded ocean currents , water salinity , temperature, , surfaced 19 times through ice cap measure surface conditions before returning san diego, california, on 26 november 1996.
