(french pronunciation: ​[piʁwɛt]) non-traveling turn on 1 leg, of 1 or more rotations, starting 1 or both legs in plié , rising onto demi-pointe or pointe. non-supporting leg held in retiré devant ( front )—when initiated fourth, retiré passé—but held in other positions such seconde. pirouettes executed en dehors, turning outwards in direction of working leg, can done en dedans, turning inwards in direction of supporting leg. (e.g. en dehors turns clockwise (to right) if right leg working , left leg supporting/standing.) spotting employed maintain balance. pirouette may return starting position or finish in arabesque or attitude.


in other genres of dance, such jazz or modern, common see pirouettes performed legs parallel (i.e. sixth position) instead of turned out in ballet.
