in 1884 tlgadintsi appointed director of alma mater , left teaching duties settle in kharpert. in 1887 founded central national school in kharpert , in 1888 became director, post held continuously, 1 exception [see below], until death in 1915 . school stood in kharpert s upper quarter next st. hagop church , commonly known central school or red college because exterior painted red. designated tlgadintsi s name. advanced level included courses in armenian secular , church history, classical , modern armenian, grammar , composition, english, english literature, french, french literature, turkish , turkish composition, mathematics, music, , physics.

in 1895, @ height of hamidian massacres, school attacked anti-armenian mob , totally burned ground. return of normalcy, tlgadintsi , colleagues managed open few classes in building in lower quarter of kharpert, while work rebuild central school @ original site undertaken financial of kharpert educational associations in united states. move original location took place in 1900. rebuilt school continued called red college though no longer painted red.

in 1903, in course of crackdown on armenian militants, tlgadintsi arrested , thrown in jail 9 months supposed subversive, along leading disciple, rupen zartarian. upon release allowed resume post director of central school.
