history

songwriter david john matthews, working in charlottesville, virginia, bartender @ miller s bar in november 1990, became friend of lawyer named ross hoffman. hoffman convinced reserved matthews record demo of few songs had written. hoffman hoped matthews shop songs in order find other musicians perform on studio work him. hoffman encouraged matthews approach carter beauford, local drummer on charlottesville music scene. beauford had been in several bands , playing on jazz show on bet. after hearing matthews demo, carter agreed spend time playing drums, both inside , outside studio. matthews approached leroi moore, local jazz musician performed john d earth quintet, join them. moore skeptically listened demo, liked heard , decided give matthews chance. trio began working on matthews songs in 1991. matthews recollects that, ...the reason went carter not because needed drummer, because thought baddest thing d ever seen , leroi, wasn t because desperately wanted saxophone, because guy blew mind. @ jazz place used bartend @ miller s, sit , watch him. serving musicians fat whiskeys , d getting more , more hosed, no matter how much, used still blow mind. , sense played heart. , when got , asked, want music sound like? said, know song wrote , guys play, want play way react song. there lot of breaking of our inhibitions.

matthews later said in interview michael krugman, in way, 3 of , approached them tape , said sure, cause had time on hands. both working on other things, had afternoon time. beginning stages of new band proved be, in words of morgan delancey, time of trial , incubation. beauford later recall that, started out three-piece thing dave , leroi...working on of dave s songs. had 4 songs @ time..and didn t work out 3 of us. matthews said, first time played together...we awful. not kind of bad, mean heinously bad. tried couple of different songs , terrible...sometimes amazes me ever had second rehearsal.

their limited instrumentals, however, did not provide full sound desired; more musicians needed. john d earth, conductor of university of virginia orchestra , local musician, taught music @ tandem friends school , had played alongside moore , beauford in jazz fusion band secret . stefan lessard, junior bassist @ time, under guidance in student jazz combo known yabanci jazzites . on recommendation of john d’earth, 15-year-old lessard asked join in studio complete demo. while partnership never intended continue beyond studio, 4 liked sound , decided continue live performances well. consequently, regular practices began in basement of carter beauford s , matthews mother s home.

peter griesar bartender @ miller s beginning in 1989. in august 1991, during miller s annual respite inventory, matthews, beauford, moore , lessard used empty bar rehearsing. griesar heard rehearsal, decided take break, , pulled out harmonica , started playing band. after few songs, invited perform them. accepted , became band s first keyboardist.

boyd tinsley last member join band. although had performed on demo matthews, moore, beauford , lessard, busy couple of other bands @ time (boyd tinsley band , down boy down) , did not want commit group of musicians in studio @ time. did not become full-time member until 1992. tinsley known violin solos, become one-on-one duels dave during live shows. matthews later admitted, had no plans of adding violinist. wanted fiddle tracked on 1 song tripping billies , , boyd friend of leroi. came in , clicked. solidified band, gave lot more power.

early years

the band s first in-studio demo recorded in february or march 1991 prior tinsley joining full-time band member , consisted of song jane likes , , best of s around , , ll up.

for years, believed band s first public show @ charlottesville s 1991 earth day festival. on october 9, 2010, stefan lessard reported, via twitter, discovery of earlier show, taped march 14, 1991, @ trax, local music venue. show benefit middle east children s alliance and, according lessard, included following songs: typical situation , best of s around , ll , song jane likes , warehouse , cry freedom , , . show included dave, stefan, carter, , leroi. local weekly appearances followed, , within short time word of band s sound spread.

they still did not have name band. 1 name considered dumwelah , tswana word hello , there little enthusiasm name , decided against it. 1 story moore reportedly telephoned place booked , said write dave matthews. person receiving call wrote band after name, , name stayed dave matthews band point on. matthews told robert trott of ap, boyd [tinsley], if memory serves, wrote dave matthews band [on flyer show]. there no time when said, let s call band dave matthews band. became that, , sort of late change when started thinking focus unfairly on me. people sort of made association, s not that.

beauford seemed agree matthews analysis of band name when said modern drummer magazine that, matter of fact, s 1 of things band likes: there isn t leader. each 1 of can express ourselves musically without being choked leader. can offer feel gonna enhance music. so, yeah, s main thing guys — me — feel make band happen. s freedom have speak our instruments.

by summer of 1991, playing @ eastern standard charles newman manager brief time. continued play @ fraternity functions; last such show @ uva @ dke house on september 11th, 1992. thereafter band began playing regular tuesday night show @ popular charlottesville club trax. tapings of shows @ trax of shared among dmb fans. after newman, coran capshaw, owner of flood zone band played, took helm of dave matthews band.

for variety of reasons, sensing band on verge of making big , not wanting have life ruled grueling schedule touring musicians face, difficulties communicating matthews, , maintaining mortgage on new home, peter griesar decided leave band after show @ trax nightclub on march 23, 1993, night known big league chew .

early 2000s

during 2000, dmb set own recording studio @ large countryside home outside charlottesville. longtime producer lillywhite @ helm, band began work on fourth studio album. heavily influenced personal conflicts, notably death of matthews uncle alcoholism, songs recorded lillywhite rank of darkest has ever written. in end, studio sessions abandoned due objection band s label, ending seven-year relationship lillywhite.

solo albums (2003)

in spring of 2003, matthews , reynolds embarked on successful solo acoustic tour. shows different normal dmb shows in venues more intimate, , song selection different.

in 2003 matthews , tinsley released first solo albums. tinsley released true reflections on june 17, 2003.

on september 23, 2003, devil, dave matthews first solo album released , sold 469,000 copies in opening week. album s sinister lead single, gravedigger won matthews grammy award. album followed dave matthews & friends tour.

the next day, september 24, dmb played free concert on great lawn in new york city s central park.

2004–2005

the gorge, combination 2-cd/1-dvd set highlights 3-night 2002 tour closer @ gorge amphitheatre in george, washington released on june 29, 2004.

later in year announced highlights band s extensive live archives available purchase via official website. first such release, live trax vol. 1, released on november 2, 2004 , performance @ centrum center in worcester, massachusetts on december 8, 1998.

on september 12, 2004, dmb played second benefit show in less year, free show @ golden gate park in san francisco. concert drew 1 of largest crowds , produced popular bootleg. band joined guitarist carlos santana on many songs, , tracks led second release in live trax series, live trax vol. 2 released on december 17, 2004. album gave fans previews of newly penned songs joy ride , hello again , , sugar ; @ time presumed destined release on new studio album in 2005. however, hello again included on subsequent album release, stand up.

in august 2004, dmb @ center of controversy when 800 pounds of liquid human waste dumped band member boyd tinsley s tour bus through grate in kinzie street bridge in chicago onto passengers aboard sightseeing boat on chicago river below. bus driver, stefan wohl, pleaded guilty, , band has donated $50,000 friends of chicago river , $50,000 chicago park district. in april 2005, band paid $200,000 settle civil lawsuit followed.

in fall 2004, dmb returned studio in charlottesville, virginia new producer. band decided wanted take chances , pursue funkier side music. achieve a&r bruce flohr tracked down producer/songwriter mark batson. according flohr in interview hitquarters, when band , him got instant creative karma. things took off bat out of hell.

during march 2005, dave matthews band arrived on australian shores first time, playing shows in melbourne, sydney, brisbane, , byron bay east coast blues & roots music festival. in march, on 9th, tour bus driver, stefan wohl, plead guilty charges of dumping bus s waste tank chicago river, onto tour boat containing 109 passengers, on august 8, 2004.

the band supported album 54 show, summer-long tour culminating in four-night stand @ colorado s red rocks amphitheatre. 2005 summer tour marked first time rashawn ross played band. dmb played short, 13 show tour in fall. fall tour featured return of christmas song, minarets (both first played since 2003) , linus , lucy (last played in 2000).

2006–2007

dave matthews made several appearances in uk during spring of 2006, notably performing solo show @ king s college student union (tutu s) on february 28, followed small solo tour promote release of stand in uk.

on april 25, 2006, dave matthews band announced $1.5 million challenge grant build new orleans habitat musicians village. band returned studio along producer mark batson in march 2006 (with resultant album slated release in winter) before embarking on annual summer tour, concluded two-night stand in band s hometown of charlottesville, virginia. tour featured addition of trumpeter rashawn ross full-time touring member, has remained since. ross, received recognition dmb s fans while playing jazz band soulive, had guested during several shows previous year. tour saw debut of new songs such idea of , shotgun , break free , kill king , , can t stop.

on july 7, 2007, dave matthews band performed on american live earth concert @ giants stadium.

on august 1, 2007, band kicked off annual summer tour in mansfield, massachusetts. tour shorter dave matthews band summer tours, 37 shows. tour saw live debut of songs band had been working on in studio earlier in year mark batson, including #27 , cornbread , dark , unique dream real. dream real played once after 2007 summer tour, @ saratoga performing arts center on june 21, 2008, featuring matthews playing keyboard. supporting acts tour included toots , maytals, roots, , robert randolph , family band.

on september 6, 2007, dave matthews band performed free concert virginia tech student body , faculty. show entitled concert virginia tech , done in memory of shootings took place on april 16, 2007. john mayer, phil vassar, , nas joined them. there on 50,000 people in attendance. 2 days later, performed benefit show @ atlanta s piedmont park allman brothers band opening. though 65,000 tickets sold (50,000 originally, second block of 15,000) 20,000 people sneaked show, making largest one-day concert in atlanta history. show raised money piedmont park conservancy association. released cd/dvd called live @ piedmont park.

2008 , death of leroi moore

on march 6, 2008, revealed band had been working rob cavallo on next album, big whiskey , groogrux king. mentioned guitarist , longtime friend tim reynolds recording band on new studio album. reynolds join band subsequent summer tour.

on april 6, dave matthews , tim reynolds performed acoustic concert @ indiana university entitled rock change in support of barack obama s presidential campaign. played benefit show seeds of compassion initiative on april 11 @ keyarena in seattle, part of five-day celebration week centered on dalai lama. followed 2 nights @ fifth annual kokua festival on april 19 , 20 @ waikiki shell in honolulu, hawaii. these shows part of benefit kokua hawai foundation, created jack johnson , wife kim benefit hawaii s educational system.

in july 2008, dave matthews band headlined alongside tom petty , heartbreakers @ mile high music festival held in denver, colorado. festival became largest in colorado history. on december 17, 2008, dmb released live album dave matthews band – live @ mile high music festival (2008). on may 27, 3 days before band embarked on annual summer tour, announced keyboardist butch taylor, had toured band since 2001, had decided leave band.

the dave matthews band played last show 5 original members on june 28 @ nissan pavilion in bristow, virginia. 2 days later saxophonist leroi moore injured in atv accident on farm near charlottesville, virginia. on july 1, 2008 while in charlottesville, dave matthews announced moore s accident. béla fleck , flecktones saxophonist jeff coffin filled in moore remainder of tour. although expected make full recovery, moore died of complications accident on august 19. following statement released on band s website:

we saddened leroi moore, saxophonist , founding member of dave matthews band, died unexpectedly tuesday afternoon, august 19, 2008, @ hollywood presbyterian medical center in los angeles sudden complications stemming june atv accident on farm near charlottesville, virginia. leroi had returned los angeles home begin intensive physical rehabilitation program.

the band went ahead scheduled show @ staples center in los angeles, matthews announced death of band s dear friend crowd.

the band s next album, titled big whiskey , groogrux king, released on june 2, 2009, coinciding supporting summer tour, slated run through october. band named album in honor of moore. moore said king in album title. tim reynolds, rashawn ross , jeff coffin performed band on both spring , summer tours of 2009 , 2010.

the album peaked @ number 1 on billboard 200, achieving platinum status. date, 3 singles have been released, funny way , why , , , me .

2011 marked 20th anniversary of band, , in march 2010 dmb announced not tour in 2011, first time in 20 years. on january 19, 2011, band announced on website: 2011 our 20th anniversary band , want celebrate playing music together. while still taking year off touring, have decided plan 4 multi-day, multi-artist music events take place summer. sending out save date emails , announcing more information wanted share news our fans first. on february 22, dates of first show announced being @ bader field in atlantic city, new jersey david gray, ray lamontagne, flaming lips, o.a.r. , many others, , take place on june 26. second show announced on april 7 , in chicago david gray, ray lamontagne, o.a.r. , others flaming lips performing dark side of moon.

the third , fourth shows announced april 21. third show on august 26–28 @ governors island in new york city dispatch, roots , gogol bordello , others. fourth show on labor day, september 2–4 @ gorge in george, washington dispatch, roots , john butler trio many more , others announced.

on december 16, 2011, band officially released dave matthews band caravan show took place on june 26, 2011 live @ atlantic city.

2012: away world

on february 7, 2012, dave matthews band announced headliner hangout music festival in gulf shores, alabama. first officially announced tour date band in 2012. other headliners @ event jack white , red hot chili peppers.

on february 14, dmb announced dates summer tour. next day announced recording new studio album producer steve lillywhite worked them on under table , dreaming, crash , before these crowded streets.

dave matthews band kicked off 43 show 2012 summer tour @ woodlands, texas. tour saw live return of fan favorite songs such never know myself , wake (our finest hour arrives). tour saw full band, live debuts of of songs off of away world (except broken things belly full , drunken soldier ) released later on in year.

the band released eighth studio album, away world, on september 11, 2012. album saw return of producer steve lillywhite, had not worked band since collaboration on never released lillywhite sessions in 2000. album went #1 on billboard 200, sixth release so. achievement tied band eagles #1 albums american band in chart history.

following successful release of away world, band kicked off 15 show, 2012 winter tour two-night show in east rutherford, new jersey on november 30 , december 1, 2012. show took place on november 30, featured band playing every song off away world. marks first time band has played album in entirety @ single show. shows november 30 december 9 opened jimmy cliff while second half of shows on tour (from december 11 december 22), opened lumineers. concluded tour @ wells fargo center in philadelphia on december 22, 2012 still played 6 songs new album, away world.

2013

in january 2013, band announced 3 performance dates spring shows in south, including new orleans jazz , heritage festival.

dmb s 45 show, 2013 summer tour kicked off @ cynthia woods mitchell pavilion in woodlands, texas on may 17. 2013 summer tour saw highest number of different songs played out of dmb tours in history of band. 110 unique songs played, including return of fan favorites such true reflections (first time played since 2003), crazy easy (first time played since 2004), , #34 (first time played since 2007). tour ended show in mountain view, california on september 8, 2013 featured longest performance of song played on tour (a 23.5-minute version of hit song 2 step ). in september 2013, group announced touring in south africa, birthplace of dave matthews, first time. on tour, dmb going south america performing in brazil, argentina, , chile.

in november 2013, matthews announced new album in works. record produced rob cavallo.

2014: special evening dave matthews band

dave matthews , tim reynolds began 2014 2 night stand in new orleans, louisiana, performing @ saenger theatre on january 15 , january 16.

in january 2014, 2014 summer tour announced special evening dave matthews band , band play 2 sets @ each show, 1 being acoustic , featuring different onstage lineups, , traditional dmb electric set, no opening acts. marked first time dmb did not make annual two-night run @ alpine valley music theatre since 2001.

in april 2014, dmb performed 5 shows in australia including west coast blues n roots festival, , byron bay bluesfest.

after noticeably struggling @ shows in australia, tinsley revealed via twitter page, has developed arthritis in right hand. tinsley underwent surgery correct carpal tunnel syndrome. stated fine , ready coming tour. tinsley has since made marked improvement, , began playing again towards beginning of 2014 summer tour.

the dave matthews band s 42-show, 2014 summer tour kicked off in woodlands, texas. shorter acoustic set played before longer electric set. acoustic set features band in numerous different arrangements. acoustic set features beauford on smaller drum kit, bassist lessard on acoustic , upright basses, reynolds on acoustic guitar, , more toned down horn section, featuring coffin on flute. acoustic set has seen return of many fan favorite songs, such ll , (played first time since 2010) pay , stolen away on 55th , 3rd , (each being played first time since 2008), , rare good time , being played first time in true, original format matthews using capo since 2004. tour has seen few recurring guests, such bela fleck, return of background vocalists, lovely ladies guesting occasional, singing on songs such stay (wasting time) , , me.

2015

in september 2014, announced dave , tim kicking off year 2 night stand in oakland, california, @ historic paramount theatre (oakland, california) on january 16 , january 17.

on january 13, 2015, band announced going on summer tour , performing 2 full sets each evening. north american tour starts in austin, texas on may 13 , concludes in phoenix, arizona on september 13. after announcement, band announced extensive european tour fall of 2015. tour commence band s first ever show in abu dhabi on october 8. after show, tour includes stops in portugal, spain, switzerland, 4 shows in italy, 4 shows in germany, denmark, netherlands, belgium, france, 3 shows in united kingdom, , wraps in ireland on november 13. tour includes stop in poland, marking first time band has played there.

the band debuted 3 new songs, may 7, 2015, band debuted black , blue bird, on legends on letterman, , @ summer tour show in raleigh, north carolina on may 22, 2015, band debuted additional accompaniment guests, lovely ladies. on june 12, 2015, virginia in rain debuted @ hartford, connecticut.

in 2016, dave matthews band reached 25th anniversary , announced anniversary tour. 2016 tour ran may 11 september 4 45 shows in u.s. , 1 show in canada. in email fan club, dmb announced in 2016 not touring in 2017, marking first time has occurred since inception in 1991. although, in january 2017, e-mail sent out announcing dave , tim reynolds touring in summer months of 2017.
