starring ian mcshane in lead role of darryl van horne , maria friedman (sukie), lucie arnaz (alexandra) , joanna riding (jane) 3 witches, show began preview period in london s west end on june 24, 2000 @ theatre royal, drury lane. opening on july 18 mixed-positive reviews, decision taken transfer more intimate prince of wales theatre march 23, 2001. ian mcshane left , replaced understudy, earl carpenter, whilst physical production revised fit in smaller theatre. number of lyrics , scenes revised , song s man? replaced rousing gospel number entitled glory of me . general cast change july 1, 2001 saw clarke peters lead company, josefina gabrielle , rebecca thornhill alex , sukie respectively, joining joanna riding stayed show after receiving olivier award nomination role. show received favourable reviews second cast but, after 15-month run, closed on october 27, 2001.

the first international production opened in australia @ princess theatre, melbourne. starring paul mcdermott darryl van horne, marina prior, angela toohey , pippa grandison jane, alexandra , sukie respectively, sabrina batshon, future finalist of australian idol season 7, little girl, , matt lee michael spofford, show began previews on 19 august 2002. revisions made, including new lyrics , excision of 1 number, loose ends . however, show never found audience , closed on 17 november 2002.

the russian production opened in moscow on 12 march 2003 using new sets on-stage rain , fire effects. role of darryl van horne double-cast dmitriy pevtsov , aleksey kortnev sharing part. other roles played 2 or 3 actors. brief revival held in 2007, scaled down sets , effects, pevtsov reprising role.

the premiere in czech republic opened on february 2007 @ brno city theatre, directed stanislav moša , choreographed igor barberić. show translated czech jiří josek , produced first commercial recording since original london cast album.

2007 u.s. premiere

the american premiere opened @ signature theatre in arlington, virginia in limited engagement june 5, 2007 through july 15, 2007. directed eric schaeffer, original director , signature theatre s artistic director, cast starred marc kudisch darryl van horne, jacquelyn piro donovan sukie rougemont, emily skinner alexandra spofford, , christiane noll jane smart. kudisch received helen hayes award, outstanding lead actor, resident musical.

the authors made numerous changes show. numbers abbreviated ( eastwick knows ), cut ( love little town ) , added ( wildest dreams ). scenes , songs re-arranged, , production received positive notices. washington post reviewer wrote musical adaptation has way more kick wispy 1987 film.... s on technical level [eric schaeffer] s production still has kinks work out, until actresses airborne... mechanics , feel clunky. broadwayworld.com stated director eric schaeffer pulls witches of eastwick together... ever succeed. culturevulture.net commented show full of body-shaking thunder, raunchy behavior, , surprises. gut reaction based on performance seen june 17 says show make broadway , reasonably successful there. talkin broadway wrote broadway actors... give memorable , funny performances in 4 lead roles.... choreographer karma camp gets chance show off in production.

a new, touring production opened on 23 august 2008 @ theatre royal, norwich. directed nikolai foster design peter mckintosh, choreography geoffrey garratt , musical direction tom deering, production visited further 26 cities before finishing @ king s theatre, glasgow on 9 may 2009. marti pellow starred darryl van horne, ria jones alexandra, poppy tierney jane and, reprising role london production, rebecca thornhill sukie. creative team collaborated writers on further changes material, incorporating many of rewrites american premiere, , making more, such re-expanding eastwick knows , adding reprise of dance devil close exorcism scene, , reinstating loose ends .

the show opened @ newly erected musiktheater linz on april, 13, 2013. first production of new musical theatre department of landestheater linz. translated german roman hinze, directed matthias davids , choreographed melissa king. played in repertoire 27 performances until january, 26, 2014.

in april 2014, musical theatre strand @ brit school performing arts , technology in croydon, uk staged production of witches of eastwick part of musical theatre final major project season 2014. cast included tarrin callendar daryl van horne, sadie shirley , kiera magurie alexandra spofford, katie shalka , erica lebedeva jane smart, kirsty king , eloise rudkin sukie rougemont, jake watkins , daniel maybury michael spofford, joseph press clyde gabriel , eleanor walsh felicia gabriel. production staged in brit theatre. creative team included robert holt (director), kerry quinn (musical director) , sam spencer-lane (choegrapher). there student creative team leaders including dylan poulton (assistant director), daniel maybury (vocal leader), joseph press , eleanor walsh (dance captains).

the show received amateur premiere in australia in july 2005. on dozen licensed productions followed in uk , ireland. license withdrawn due 2008 uk tour, single amateur company being permitted stage concurrent production in october 2008.
