biography
early years

sutherland arrived in cape town in 1896, aged twenty-four, no fixed ideas of career. engaged in various occupations in johannesburg, mafeking, matabeleland, lake tanganyika , congo including professional boxing, running african trading stores , working labour overseer on construction of beira-mashonaland railway. on outbreak of anglo boer war in 1899 moved african hinterland hunt elephant professionally.

in 1904 sutherland moved german east africa hunted next decade. 1905 1906 became involved in maji maji rebellion, fighting german colonial forces awarded iron cross conduct. in 1912 sutherland met lifelong friend major g. h. anderson, whom sutherland introduced elephant hunting. same year sutherland published account of exploits date, adventures of elephant hunter. upon arrival in london in 1913 feted world s greatest elephant hunter .

military service

in 1914, @ outbreak of world war i, sutherland hunting in german east africa. german authorities attempted detain him but, making detour of 500 miles (800 km), sutherland made through portuguese east africa nyasaland, upon arrival engaged governor intelligence officer.

in june 1915, sutherland severely wounded german sniper shot him in abdomen explosive bullet. after conquest of german east africa, sutherland made chief intelligence officer , provost marshall on brigadier-general norley s staff rank of lieutenant , in 1916 promoted captain. sutherland mentioned in dispatches on several occasions , awarded légion d’honneur services special guide nyasaland field force.

return hunting , death

after war, sutherland hunted in uganda, belgian congo , french congo. in 1929, sutherland fell victim conspiracy azande tribe against white people, , poisoned, recovered , continued hunt although partially paralysed. sutherland died poison’s effects in yubo sleeping sickness camp on 26 june 1932, in bequeathed of property major anderson. sutherland buried near yubo, friends later erected bronze tablet on spot, engraved 2 elephants standing beneath palm tree, reads in part:
