fallingwater, 1 of wright s famous private residences (completed 1937), built mr. , mrs. edgar j. kaufmann sr., @ mill run, pennsylvania. constructed on 30-foot waterfall, designed according wright s desire place occupants close natural surroundings. house intended more of family getaway, rather live-in home. construction series of cantilevered balconies , terraces, using limestone verticals , concrete horizontals. house cost $155,000, including architect s fee of $8,000. 1 of wright s expensive pieces. kaufmann s own engineers argued design not sound. overruled wright, contractor secretly added steel horizontal concrete elements. in 1994, robert silman , associates examined building , developed plan restore structure. in late 1990s, steel supports added under lowest cantilever until detailed structural analysis done. in march 2002, post-tensioning of lowest terrace completed.
