the bronze entrance doors administration building on west 155th street designed academy member adolph alexander weinman , dedicated memory of mary e. wilkins freeman , women writers of united states.


the academy occupies 3 buildings on west end of audubon terrace complex created archer m. huntington, heir southern pacific railroad fortune , noted philanthropist. convince american academy of arts , letters , national institute of arts , letters, separate related organizations @ time, move complex, huntington established building funds , endowments both.


the first building, on south side of complex, along west 155th street, designed william m. kendall of firm of mckim, mead & white; kendall himself member of academy. anglo-italian renaissance administration building designed in 1921 , opened in 1923. on north side, building housing auditorium , gallery designed cass gilbert, academy member, , built 1928-30. these additions complex necessitated considerable alterations audubon terrace plaza, designed mckim, mead & white.


in 2007, american numismatic society, had occupied charles p. huntington-designed building east of academy s original building, vacated space move smaller quarters downtown. building, incorporates 1929 addition designed h. brooks price, has become academy s annex , houses additional gallery space. in 2009, space between annex , administration building turned new entrance link, designed vincent czajka pei cobb freed & partners.
